Re: I'm just so bored of AI

In his post, "I'm just so bored of AI," Terence Eden says words that speak directly to my soul:

I can't fucking wait for this bubble to burst so we can go back to chatting shit about literally anything else.

I have long felt that the discussion of AI, whether from its entranced advocates or from its knowledgeable critics, becomes part of a never-ending, self-sustaining debate where debating anything is fair game, regardless of topic. It's another entry point in the "need" to talk something to death. When a topic simply becomes more fuel for the fire, you end up with a couple forms of censorship: first, by flattening topics for discussion as to what's "acceptable;" second, by ensuring any topic requires prolonged debates or discussions to the subatomic level. In either format, folks who wish to talk about other topics, or even to talk casually about AI, get steamrolled by the prevailing attitude of being all-in on the discussion. You either end up not talking about it because you don't want to be so goddamned exhausted in the process, or because you simply are bored of hearing about it. It's not even a WarGames situation where "the only winning move is not to play," because the conversation still goes on without you regardless, so if this is what victory looks like, it's a hollow one.

Nowadays, WOPR would be playing Go instead of tic-tac-toe.

Anyway, here's to everyone who is tired of AI, and who struggles with choosing not to talk about it. Neil Peart (RIP) would be proud of you for deciding not to decide.
