Week Notes, 2025-07-06
Weekly Features from June 30th - July 6th:
๐It was a relatively quiet week, largely because of the July 4th holiday on Friday. L. and I watched fireworks from our apartment on Thursday 07-03, then we saw more fireworks while swimming on Friday 07-04. The heat wave had made the pool in our apartment complex so hot that it was almost unbearable to swim in. You really shouldn't be sweating while swimming, especially at night, but that's what I experienced on Friday.
๐ฅ A highlight of the week was an on-site visit to Barnes-Jewish Hospital during Wednesday 07-02. The assignment was to visit various departments, largely Operating Room pods and Isolation rooms, to test out handheld barcode scanners. There had been complaints about them not functioning properly in Epic, which prompted my team's visitation that day. Almost all of the rooms we checked had functioning scanners, and after further investigation we determined the errors we found were related to hardware, not Epic. We discovered USB connection issues, improper seating of the scanner in its charging cradle, and the occasional bad battery in the handheld unit. None of these problems had anything to do with Epic. I managed well over 9000 steps in the hospital, walking on very hard floors the entire time, which exhausted me for much longer than I had expected. I still felt the effects of the visit on Thursday 07-03.
โ I am finally caught up with Doctor Who, as I finished my Season 15 watch on Wednesday 07-02. I wrote a follow-up to my original Doctor Who post, and I think they both are the best summaries of how I feel about the show at a time when its future is uncertain.
๐ชฆ Today marks the one-year anniversary of the last time I saw my mother alive. On this day back in 2024, L. and I treated her to a lunch at the New Lenox branch of Cooperโs Hawk, then went shopping afterwards for groceries and pet supplies. We were both shocked at her behavior in the restaurant, as she was unnecessarily rude towards the server. At first, my mother thought the server was too slow and ignoring our table, then once we received our order, she started to complain the server was trying to rush us out the door! Neither complaint had anything to do with reality, particularly in light of how the restaurant was maybe 1/3 occupied. My mother acted more in line at Meijer during our shopping trip, but both L. and I were really worried about what we saw at the restaurant. We were aware of her physical condition, but her mental state wasnโt so obvious until we witnessed it ourselves.

For what it's worth, my opinion would be to start at the Jon Pertwee/Third Doctor era (Series 7) and go all the way up to the end of Series 21 (where Peter Davison/Fifth Doctor regenerates to Colin Baker/Sixth Doctor). Skip ahead to Series 24 (start of Sylvester McCoy/Seventh Doctor), finish up with the final season of Series 26, then catch up with the First and Second Doctors (Series 1-6). Finally, watch the nadir of the original run with the Colin Baker era (Series 22-23) with the understanding that things really did get better.↩
