Take 5, D.

Week Notes, 2025-07-27

Weekly Features from July 21st - July 27th:

🥵 Still too hot, almost too hot to think. I'll persevere through posting, somehow.

⛑️ Last week's rash, which definitely wasn't scabies, has largely faded. I was able to return to the swimming pool late Thursday 07-24, with no ill side effects. There are a couple noticeable scars, but 80% of the initial rash is gone.

🏋🏻 I have revived the 7-minute workout routine, which for now will be a twice-weekly event. The workouts from the Seven app are truly high-intensity, but I'm getting the hang of them. Once I do so, the workouts will happen three times per week.

🦜 On a whim, I replaced the hummingbird feeder on our property with a larger-capacity model. The original feeder held 16 ounces, and there were some weeks where I'd fill it up every 2-3 days. The newer model is nearly doubled in capacity, but the nectar isn't disappearing as fast as before. It turns out that the carpenter bees were a big source of nectar depletion in the original, and as the newer model isn't as friendly to their probosces, the nectar levels aren't dropping as much. I'm still keeping the bigger one, though, as there are now perches for the hummingbirds to rest upon while they feed.

🥚 Sad news from the Loon Cam, as hosted by the Loon Preservation Committee in New Hampshire. Two cameras were set up for nesting loons, and in both cases, the eggs were inviable. There was no embryo development for either set of eggs, with several reasons as to why that could happen. You can read about them in the LPC newsletter.

📲 iOS 26 Public Beta is...interesting. The Liquid Glass interface works OK for now, but some of what I'm seeing appears to be a change for its own sake. Then again, I remember feeling similarly when iOS 7 came out and disposed of the old skeuomorphic look. I've read warnings that the macOS 26 interpretation of Liquid Glass leaves a lot to be desired, so I won't test its Public Beta at all.

🚐 Friday 08-01 will officially mark 20 years since I moved to St. Louis from Chicago. My move happened exactly 8 months after L. moved here for a job, and in that interim, we got engaged and I made efforts to find any job that would bring me here. I found an old LiveJournal entry that sums up that blurry weekend when I accepted a temp job offer, threw some clothing in a pile, then high-tailed it to St. Louis. Perhaps that will be my Unarchive post for the week?

🎡 To commemorate 20 years in St. Louis, L. and I will make our first-ever visit to the Missouri State Fair during its opening weekend. From STL, the Illinois State Fair in Springfield is an easy day trip, whereas visiting the Missouri fair would require an overnight stay. This year, we were able to take off Friday 08-08 and find a hotel room in Columbia, so that will be our home base for that weekend.
