Week Notes, 2025-08-03
Weekly Features from July 28th - August 3rd:
๐ Hey, it's cooled off! The windows are open as I'm writing this week's update. Having the windows open in early August is rare enough, especially while living in St. Louis. I'll enjoy these fleeting moments while they last.
๐ Both my iPhone and Mac are running their respective OS 26 Public Betas. Earlier in the week, there was wishful thinking on my part regarding ๏ฃฟ products where I proposed the idea of a NeXT sub-brand that would sit at the high-end of every line Apple makes. Meanwhile, back in the real world of beta testing, both iOS and macOS 26 are working alright for me. I see more Liquid Glass glitches on my iPhone, along with some slower performances of standard operations. As for my Mac mini, it doesn't really feel different in its operations. The macOS rendition of the Liquid Glass interface is almost too subtle, minus the adopting of the iOS Dynamic Island display in its toolbar--there's no missing that! Even with those little hiccups, the Public Betas have been a much better experience than I had originally thought.
๐ I am on-call for my job this week. It's my first on-call since May, and only my second time overall in this job. So far, all of the tickets are related to providers needing their DEA or state licenses renewed so they can prescribe medication, particularly narcotics. Almost all of these tickets require other Epic teams to verify state and federal databases, so there's little work to be done either by me or the folks to whom I escalate. My shift will end on the morning of Thursday 08-07, just in time for a three-day weekend to visit the middle of Missouri and attend the Missouri State Fair.
๐๐ป The 7-minute workouts from Seven have been challgening, but in a good way. There's a lot more variety in the routines, which means I'm not yet bored of them. I have mixed in these workouts with post-dinner walks with L. as I want to establish better habits of being active. If I can keep up with these actions, I can maintain a decent level of activity later in the year when the weather turns unpleasant. I don't have to achieve the best workouts ever, but I should be able to achieve some activity, and that's better than no activity.
๐๏ธ I have now lived in St. Louis for 20 years as of Friday 08-01. To celebrate, throw toasted ravioli...well, don't throw it at me, but you can lightly toss it up in the air and catch it, provided it didn't just come out of the oven. Some thoughts about the anniversary, most of which related to the specific events of the move, are found in the most recent Unarchive post.
๐ท Friday 08-08 would have been my mother's 76th birthday. Part of the reason for attending the Missouri State Fair is to not dwell too much on her first birthday after her death. Another reason is to commemorate her as she was a big fan of state fairs, particularly the one in Illinois, so going somewhere new would have been something she would have appreciated. There is a Missouri Wine Tent on the fairgrounds, according to the official map, so we could toast to her memory while we're there.
๐ For this entry, and possibly future Weekly Notes, I'll spell out an explanation for the media files I'm noting below. This week, some further explanations and/or reactions to the Reading links.
๐ Congratulations to Jedda and LC on their marriage! A tsunami warning couldn't stop you two from tying the knot!

- Batch 293: Alex & Stephenโs Trappist House, Malt Couture
๐Organizing:
- A multi-day project to clean out the refrigerator, as there was a nasty odor that needed to be taken care of. I believe the source was a spilled oil from a jar of sun-dried tomatoes.
- Starting to pare down my iOS and macOS backgrounds, both to reduce decision fatigue and to remove those which clash against the Liquid Glass themes.
๐ Reading:
- Internet age verification begins rollout, and Apple is set to be dragged into it, 9 to 5 Mac
- I'm not sure if there's a great solution for age verification if it has to exist. Both private companies and governments are ripe for security vulnerabilities and/or weaponizing their data against people. Maybe have the verification OS-based? I don't know.
- The UK is slogging through an online age-gate apocalypse, The Verge
- If the goal were to break up the internet, the UK's actions would be a smashing success. Hmmm.
- Everything Else, New Left Review
- Maybe our best exposure to Dubai should be with the trendy chocolate. Going there appears to be a bright and shiny nightmare.
- RIP Tom Lehrer, Song Satirist And Mathematician Who Also Shilled For Dodge, The Autopian
- At least he outlived Henry Kissinger. RIP to a man who knew how to sing creatively. Creative-L-Y.
- Eddington Is a Tragic Masterpiece of the 2020s, Jacobin
- No desire to see this film as it will hit too close to home, but I get why it exists.

- A look back at an Apple product that didn't fail as much as widely believed, but instead became an intermediary for future products.
- The rise of Whatever, fuzzy notepad
- I thought I read this article last month, but I can't find it in my notes. A long discussion that's adjacent to slop, Bitcoin, and the downside of "eh, good enough."
๐พ Socializing:
- Not much socializing outside this week, as most activities happened on Saturday 08-02 and today, with visits to Rosemary Coffee, Side Project Cellar, and Yummi Tummi yesterday; today, a long hangout at Ethio Coffee after church was the main event.
๐งช Testing:
- The iOS and macOS Public Betas for their respective OS 26 releases, as mentioned earlier.
- Finalized on Apollo One and Pixea for my photo flow management on my Mac; Apollo One will be for rating and organizing photos, while Pixea will be the photo display app. All other programs competing for these roles were deleted.
- Stopped TestFlight testing of trunks (iOS) and deleted it from the iPhone; so far, nothing beats Ivory as a Mastodon client.
