Take 5, D.

Weekly Update 2025-10-26

What happened during the week of October 20th - October 26th:

‼️ A couple weeks ago, I had hit a pause explaining my media consumption. From that hold, I ending up revamping the format of the weekly update with an eye on editing its length. The highlights section is much shorter and has better organization than before, and I've added a separate section to explain in further detail what I liked about the media I enjoyed this week. I may tinker with how some items in the middle section are grouped, but I hope this will be the format to use from here on out.

🍂 Autumn is finally here in STL, nearly a month after the actual equinox. Parts of summer were still lingering after our return from the Triangle Trip, but in the intervening two weeks, I've had to turn on the heat for the first time, and warmer blankets are now on our bed. If the weather predictions hold out, Halloween weather will see lows in the mid-upper 30s, which feels appropriate for this time of year. Our hike in Wildwood on Saturday 10-25 saw trees in early-to-mid peak form, so I hope that next weekend I'll see most trees at their fall peak color display.

🌳 On a related front, the in-laws have closed up their New Hampshire residence(s), and are now slowly trekking back to Florida. Autumn was disappointing in New England this year, with only the far northern reaches of NH, Maine, and Vermont showing off the stereotypical color. Even in those locations, peak displays were shorter than usual. If you watch the New England Fall Colors link below, you'll see that the peak has largely passed through the northern part of the region, with the southern half about to get started.

🏁 When L. and I visited New Mexico in the summer of 2022, we had a long list of attractions that we just barely touched. As we're now within 3 weeks of the next trip there, I just decided to recycle that list instead of trying to scrounge up a new one. Most, if not all, of the attractions we wanted to see in 2022 are still around in 2025. No need to reinvent the wheel here.

🥱 Beyond these highlights, the week was relatively sedate. We've had two weekends in a row of being off-kilter, first with the Triangle Trip, and then with me being hung over from the Side Project party. Both L. and I are due for a quieter, "boring" week.

More Info About The Media Selections From This Week:

If you're looking for some sort of background music for working, reading, or otherwise to drown out your surroundings, I can strongly recommend the Dark Ambient Noisescapes podcast. The episode linked above is just over 6 hours long, so it can play pretty much all throughout your work day if you like.

The article about the Mario-style death animation is truly what the internet was meant for. Someone had to take a deep, nerdy dive into all of the different styles of "Mario death," and I'm glad they did so.

"Let people enjoy things!!" is actually a bait-and-switch title. Read it and you'll see why. There was bound to be a poptimism backlash after many years of it reigning supreme, but it feels like the answer isn't one -ism, but rather a multitude of smaller -isms to sort through.

RCR can be an acquired taste, but it's one I have. I'm impressed that the guy could get part of his furry costume into the front seat of a Miata!

Finally, there's no way I could pass up a rewatch of the MST3K episode that gave us DEEP HURTING.
