Week In Review 2026-05-08
This weekly update covers Sunday 05-03-26 through Friday 05-08-26 (an icon Glossary, if needed).
LIFE
- 🈁 Continuing on from last week’s theme about deadlines adding clarity to life, as there was no getting around the hard stop on Friday 05-08. L. & I are going to New Mexico, no matter what happened in our work or personal lives.
- 📕 I’m finally getting prices for burying my mother’s cremains, including a new tombstone to replace what’s in the ground now. The overall total is currently in the $2500-2700 range, which is far less than I had feared. Even an imprecise dollar figure is helping to ease my worries about the overall process.
- 📜 The vacation means a slight change in publishing my Week In Review, as this will go live around the time we are landing in Albuquerque. The following WIP will be a recap of the vacation, so it may come out sometime after Sunday 05-17. Normal publishing should resume by Saturday 05-23.
- ❤️🩹 I should call in the referral to a vascular specialist, though I suspect the issue with my lower right leg has more to do with nerves than circulation.
EXPLORE
- 🎨 Somehow, I found time to write not just another Randoming entry, but I also squeezed in a quick hands-on early impression of my new Caira camera. If you're not familiar with Caira, well, read the post to gain some knowledge!
- 🔬 I guess upgrading to the Release Candidate of iOS 26.5 and macOS Tahoe 26.5 counts as testing?
- 🪟 Kept my outside excursions low this week to save up for the vacation.
MEDIA
- 📰 They Said a 3D Printer Would Bring Housing to This Town. It Was Yet Another Broken Promise., ProPublica; 3D-Printed Homes, an Abandoned $590,000 Deposit, the FBI: What Really Happened in This Small Town?, ProPublica (Another chapter in the sad saga of Cairo, IL, and of local folks who feel that they can use this town to fleece not only larger governments, but also the long-suffering locals who have been promised many miracles that never come to fruition.)
- 🎬 Episode 13: Does Bob Lutz Count As A Problematic Fave [With Guest Liam McAnderson], Tran Girlismo (The Well There’s Your Problem crossover you didn’t know you needed, as Liam joins semi-WTYP regular host Victoria, along with TG co-host Jordan, to talk car affordability or the lack thereof, and their joint love of the Dodge Viper.)
- 🎬 St. Louis Skills On Wheels | 2026, SkateLyfe TV (I can barely roller skate in a forward direction without falling, yet these folks are skilled at going backwards. Amazing. Great steppin' music for the clip's soundtrack.)
WORK
- 🏥 Beaker remains a mess. There’s some consensus on the team that we will be dealing with Beaker issues for the rest of the year, along with fears that our team will slowly transform into Beaker-only support. I’m not sure how I feel about either of these opinions, to be honest.
OTHER
- 🗣️ I had a mini-complaint about Pitchfork, but I'll save it for later.
NEXT
- 🔮 Vacation time in New Mexico! See you soon.
PICTURE
- 📸 From our last trip to New Mexico, here’s L. standing near the World’s Largest Pistachio in Alamogordo. We won’t be as far south in NM this time, though.
